The event was officiated by YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials including Tuan Haji Semawi bin Haji Mohamad, Director of the Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS), YBhg. Dr. Maziah binti Che Yusoff, Secretary General of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), YBhg. Dato’ Sri Rohani binti Abdul Karim, Chairman of the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), and YBhg. Dato’ Abdul Shukur bin Abdullah, Director General of LPPKN.

Representatives from the Sarawak State Education Department and Kuching District Education Office were also present.

The National PEKERTI Programme, spearheaded by LPPKN, focuses on education, prevention, and early intervention to address challenges faced by teenagers, particularly issues such as teenage pregnancy and risky sexual behaviour.

By equipping young people with knowledge and awareness, the initiative seeks to empower them to make responsible decisions that safeguard their well-being and future prospects.

Beyond awareness, the programme aims to foster collaboration between educational institutions, parents, and government agencies.

This strategic partnership is intended to create a supportive ecosystem that nurtures youth development and strengthens family values.

The initiative also highlights the importance of community involvement in building resilience among teenagers.

Speaking at the launch, YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri emphasised the need for continuous engagement with young people to ensure they are well-informed and supported.

She noted that the programme reflects the government’s commitment to addressing social issues through proactive measures, combining education with practical interventions.

The presence of senior officials from both federal and state agencies underscored the significance of the programme.

Their involvement signals a united effort to tackle youth-related challenges and to promote a culture of responsibility and awareness among teenagers in Sarawak.

The PEKERTI initiative is expected to be rolled out across schools and community centres, with activities designed to engage teenagers directly.

These include workshops, awareness campaigns, and interactive sessions aimed at reinforcing positive behaviour and responsible decision-making.

By strengthening cooperation between stakeholders, the programme aspires to build a safer and healthier environment for young people.

It also aligns with national objectives to reduce social risks and promote family development as a cornerstone of community well-being.

The launch of the Sarawak State-level National PEKERTI Programme marks the beginning of a long-term commitment to youth empowerment, ensuring that teenagers are equipped with the tools and support they need to thrive in an increasingly complex social landscape.
