PADAWAN, July 9 — A 30-year-old e-hailing rider was found dead at a rest hut near the Temurang Visitor Information Centre along Jalan Puncak Borneo Heights here yesterday.
The deceased, identified as Anders Willy Wong, was discovered lying on the bamboo floor of the hut’s veranda by members of the public before the incident was reported to the police.
Padawan District Police Chief Superintendent Barry William said the case has been classified as a sudden death report (SDR), with further investigations currently underway.
“The victim was found by the public in a lying position at the rest hut before the matter was reported to the police,” he said in a statement.
He added that Anders was pronounced dead at 11.24am by an assistant medical officer from Bunuk Health Clinic, who conducted an examination at the scene.
Initial investigations found that the victim was fully dressed when he was discovered. His motorcycle was also found parked safely near the hut, while a bag believed to belong to him was found beside his body.
Police investigations revealed that Anders had been working as an e-hailing rider for about four years. He was also the eldest child in his family.
According to Barry, information from the victim’s father showed that Anders left his home at around 9am on Tuesday to work as usual. However, he failed to return home, and the family was later informed by members of the public about the discovery of his body.
“The victim’s body was then taken to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) by the Padawan District Police Headquarters transport unit with assistance from personnel from Beratok Police Station for further action,” he said.
Barry said a post-mortem examination was scheduled to be carried out today to determine the actual cause of death.
Police also reminded the public not to spread rumours or make any assumptions regarding the case until the official post-mortem results are released.
The sudden passing of the e-hailing rider has drawn attention from the local community, especially those who knew him as a worker who regularly travelled around the area to provide transport services. Authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
