SEMATAN – The Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department, through its Sematan District Marine Fisheries Office, organised an Interaction Ceremony and Handover of Touch Point Aid for local fishermen on 8 July 2026.
The event, held at Tanah Hitam Village Community Hall, was aimed at strengthening ties with the fishing community while supporting the sustainable growth of the sector.
The programme began with a briefing session led by officials from the Marine Fisheries Department and representatives from the Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM).
The session provided updates on government initiatives, assistance schemes and services available to fishermen and fishing entrepreneurs.
Officials highlighted how these measures are designed to improve productivity and enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of fishing communities in Sematan.
The ceremony then moved to the symbolic distribution of Touch Point Aid, followed by the presentation of six mock cheques to selected fishermen.
The gesture was intended to demonstrate the government’s commitment to empowering the fishing industry and ensuring that support reaches those who need it most.
Senior Director of the Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department, YBrs Encik Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Wahab, officiated the event.
In his remarks, he expressed hope that the assistance provided would be fully utilised to boost income, increase productivity and strengthen the long-term sustainability of the fisheries sector.
He emphasised that such initiatives are crucial in helping fishermen adapt to modern challenges while maintaining traditional livelihoods.
The ceremony was attended by key figures including Senior Assistant Director of LKIM, Mr. Bobby Dallen son of Indoi, Head of Fisheries Region I Kuching, Mr. Jackson son of Clive Jusak, and representatives from the Lundu District Office.
Also present were Mr. Anuar Fakhriyuddin bin Matamit, Head of the Fisheries Development Branch, Mr. Fairol Tajuddin bin Suhaili, senior officers from JPLS, and staff from both Kuching and Sematan fisheries offices.
Officials noted that the programme reflects the government’s broader strategy to support rural communities and strengthen Sarawak’s fishing industry.
By providing aid and guidance, authorities aim to ensure that fishermen can continue contributing to food security, economic growth and cultural heritage.
The event concluded with appreciation extended to all agencies and individuals involved in making the programme a success.
Organisers expressed optimism that similar initiatives will continue to foster stronger relationships between the Marine Fisheries Department and local communities while promoting a more competitive and sustainable fishing industry in Sarawak.
