Community Morning Hike Promotes Health and Unity in Padawan

KUCHING – A weekend hiking activity in Haji Baki brought together school leaders, teachers, and education staff from Padawan District, highlighting the importance of health, friendship, and community spirit. The event, held on Saturday, 11 July 2026, was organised by the Padawan District Chinese Primary School Principals’ Committee and attended by YB Dato’ Ir Lo Khere Chiang.

Participants gathered early in the morning to embark on the hike, which was designed not only as a recreational outing but also as a way to encourage healthier living among educators and the wider community. The initiative reflected a growing emphasis on wellness activities in Sarawak, where schools and local leaders are increasingly promoting outdoor programmes to balance professional responsibilities with physical wellbeing.

YB Dato’ Ir Lo Khere Chiang expressed appreciation for the strong turnout, noting that such activities help reduce stress and foster closer ties among colleagues. “Community events like this help keep people healthy and active, while encouraging stronger connections among the community,” he said. His remarks underscored the dual purpose of the hike: improving fitness while strengthening social bonds.

The hike also aligned with broader efforts by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government to encourage citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles. Lo highlighted that the administration continues to support initiatives that bring people together in positive ways, reinforcing the message that wellness and unity are central to community development.

Outdoor activities such as hiking have gained popularity in Sarawak, particularly in areas like Padawan, which are known for their natural landscapes. Local educators have increasingly embraced these programmes as a means of promoting balance in daily life. Teachers and principals involved in the hike shared that the event offered a refreshing break from routine, allowing them to reconnect with nature while building stronger friendships.

The choice of Haji Baki as the venue reflected the district’s commitment to showcasing its scenic environment. The area, with its lush greenery and accessible trails, provided an ideal backdrop for participants to enjoy the outdoors. Organisers emphasised that the hike was not a competitive event but rather a collective experience aimed at inclusivity and relaxation.

Community-based wellness programmes have become more common across Sarawak, with schools and local organisations working together to create opportunities for physical activity. These initiatives are seen as vital in addressing modern challenges such as sedentary lifestyles and stress among professionals. By involving educators, the Padawan hike demonstrated how schools can lead by example in promoting healthier habits.

The event also highlighted the role of education leaders in shaping community engagement beyond the classroom. Principals and teachers who joined the hike noted that such activities strengthen teamwork and morale, which ultimately benefit the school environment. The committee behind the hike expressed hopes that similar programmes would continue in the future, expanding participation to include students and parents.

Observers noted that the hike reflected a wider trend in Sarawak, where local leaders are increasingly blending cultural, educational, and health-focused initiatives. By encouraging outdoor activities, communities are not only improving physical wellbeing but also reinforcing values of unity and cooperation.

The Padawan District Chinese Primary School Principals’ Committee has previously organised community-centred events, but the hiking activity marked a significant step in promoting wellness among educators. With support from YB Dato’ Ir Lo Khere Chiang, the initiative demonstrated how collaboration between government representatives and education leaders can create meaningful experiences for the community.

As Sarawak continues to focus on development and community harmony, events like the Haji Baki hike serve as reminders of the importance of balance between work, health, and social connection. The organisers expressed optimism that the success of this activity would inspire more schools and local groups to adopt similar programmes, ensuring that wellness remains a priority across the district.
