Community Joins Hands with Lo Khere Chiang to Clean Sg Maong Cemetery

KUCHING – Residents of Sg Maong came together on Saturday morning, 11 July 2026, for a community-led gotong-royong at Tanah Perkuburan Islam Sg Maong, Jalan Keretapi. The programme, organised by JKKK Burung Lilin in collaboration with Masjid Bakti Nur Islam, aimed to restore cleanliness and dignity to the cemetery while fostering unity among participants.

UDC Event 2026

The event was attended by YB Dato’ Ir Lo Khere Chiang, who joined residents in the collective effort. Volunteers worked side by side to clear overgrown vegetation, tidy pathways, and beautify the grounds. The initiative was not only about maintaining the cemetery but also about honouring the memory of those who had passed away.

Organisers encouraged the public to take time to visit the graves of their parents, grandparents, and loved ones, offering prayers and reflecting on their contributions to the community. This reminder highlighted the importance of preserving heritage and ensuring that future generations continue to respect and care for burial sites.

Lo expressed his gratitude to those who participated, noting that such activities strengthen community bonds and instil a sense of shared responsibility. He emphasised that caring for cemeteries is part of maintaining cultural and spiritual values, and that collective action ensures these spaces remain places of respect and remembrance.

Community clean-up programmes like this have become increasingly common across Sarawak, reflecting a broader commitment to civic pride and environmental stewardship. In recent years, local committees and religious institutions have collaborated to organise similar initiatives, recognising that maintaining public spaces requires cooperation and dedication.

The gotong-royong at Sg Maong also demonstrated the role of grassroots organisations in mobilising residents. JKKK Burung Lilin and Masjid Bakti Nur Islam played a central role in coordinating the event, ensuring that volunteers had the tools and guidance needed to carry out the work effectively. Their leadership underscored how local institutions can inspire collective action for the benefit of the wider community.

Participants described the morning as meaningful, noting that it provided an opportunity to reconnect with neighbours while contributing to a worthy cause. For many, the activity was not only about physical labour but also about spiritual reflection, as they remembered the sacrifices and kindness of those buried at the cemetery.

The choice of Tanah Perkuburan Islam Sg Maong as the site for the clean-up highlighted the importance of preserving religious and cultural heritage. Cemeteries are often seen as sacred spaces, and maintaining their cleanliness is viewed as an act of respect. By involving the wider community, organisers reinforced the idea that heritage preservation is a collective duty.

Observers noted that the event reflected Sarawak’s broader values of unity and cooperation. By bringing together residents from different backgrounds, the programme demonstrated how shared responsibilities can strengthen social cohesion. The initiative also served as a reminder that community spirit remains a vital part of Sarawak’s identity.

As the morning concluded, organisers expressed hope that similar activities would continue in the future. They encouraged residents to take proactive steps in caring for public spaces, whether through organised programmes or individual efforts. The success of the Sg Maong clean-up showed that when communities unite, they can achieve meaningful outcomes that benefit both present and future generations.
