JPJ Bintulu and AADK Joint Ops Boost Road Safety

BINTULU – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Bintulu Branch conducted an integrated enforcement operation with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) on 14 July along Jalan Bintulu-Sibu. The initiative aimed to strengthen road law enforcement and address drug abuse among motorists.

During the operation, officers inspected 141 vehicles of different types. Several violations were detected, including driving without a valid licence, absence of a Goods Driving Licence (GDL), expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM), and breaches of Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) permit conditions. Technical faults in vehicles were also identified. Enforcement action was taken against all offenders in line with current legislation.

AADK carried out screenings on 34 individuals, with one person testing positive for kratom. The agency has taken further action under its jurisdiction. JPJ confirmed that no immigration-related offences were recorded during the exercise, as the operation was focused primarily on road safety and drug enforcement.

JPJ Sarawak expressed appreciation to AADK for its cooperation and commitment throughout the operation. The department emphasised that synergy between agencies is crucial to ensuring compliance with road laws, tackling drug-related offences, and creating a safer environment for all road users.

The integrated approach reflects Sarawak’s broader strategy of combining resources and expertise to address multiple issues simultaneously. By involving AADK, the operation highlights the growing concern over drug abuse among drivers, which can impair judgement and increase accident risks. Kratom, in particular, has been flagged by authorities as a substance that can affect alertness and driving performance.

Road safety remains a priority in Sarawak, where enforcement agencies continue to face challenges such as unlicensed drivers, expired permits, and unsafe vehicle modifications. Authorities have urged motorists to comply with regulations, maintain valid licences, and ensure their vehicles meet safety standards. Public cooperation is seen as essential in reducing accidents and promoting discipline on the roads.

JPJ Sarawak has pledged to continue strengthening integrated enforcement with partner agencies. Future operations are expected to expand across more districts, targeting a wider range of offences. The department reiterated its commitment to protecting road users and ensuring enforcement remains consistent, fair, and effective.

The success of the Bintulu operation demonstrates the importance of coordinated action in delivering tangible results. By addressing both traffic and social issues, the initiative contributes to a safer and more disciplined road environment for Sarawakians.
