KUCHING – The Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) received a courtesy visit from Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd. on 17 July, with discussions centred on strengthening collaboration in sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The meeting, held at the department’s headquarters, was led by Sarawak Petchem’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Mohammad bin Haji Ibrahim, and chaired by Director of Forests Sarawak, Datu Haji Hamden bin Haji Mohammad.
The session provided a platform for Sarawak Petchem to share updates on the Sarawak Methanol Project, a key industrial initiative aimed at supporting the state’s economic growth.
Alongside project progress, the company outlined strategic proposals for collaboration in areas such as environmental sustainability, carbon management, and forest conservation.
Discussions highlighted opportunities for joint tree planting programmes and carbon-related initiatives that would complement Sarawak’s aspirations for a greener, low-carbon economy.
Both parties agreed that such partnerships could play a vital role in enhancing forest restoration, boosting carbon sequestration, and promoting responsible environmental practices across the state.
The Forest Department welcomed Sarawak Petchem’s initiatives, reaffirming its commitment to working closely with industry partners to balance economic development with environmental responsibility.
Officials noted that collaboration between government agencies and corporate stakeholders is essential to achieving meaningful progress in sustainable forest management and climate resilience.
Sarawak Petchem emphasised that its sustainability efforts are designed to align with the state’s broader development goals.
By integrating environmental considerations into industrial projects, the company aims to contribute to Sarawak’s transition towards a green economy while ensuring long-term benefits for communities and ecosystems.
The meeting also underscored the importance of high-integrity carbon projects that comply with Sarawak’s regulatory framework.
Both organisations expressed confidence that continued cooperation would generate innovative solutions to address climate challenges while supporting economic growth.
Stakeholders highlighted that initiatives such as tree planting and conservation programmes not only benefit the environment but also create opportunities for community engagement and education.
These efforts are expected to foster greater awareness of sustainability and encourage active participation from local residents.
The courtesy visit reflects Sarawak’s growing emphasis on integrating sustainability into its development agenda.
With industrial projects like the Sarawak Methanol Project contributing to economic expansion, partnerships with agencies such as the Forest Department ensure that growth is pursued responsibly and with long-term environmental considerations in mind.
As discussions move forward, both Sarawak Petchem and FDS are expected to formalise collaborative initiatives that will strengthen Sarawak’s position as a leader in sustainable development.
The partnership is seen as a step towards building resilience against climate change and ensuring that future generations inherit a thriving and sustainable environment.
