KUCHING – Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), through its DBKU CARES initiative, has stepped forward to provide aid to families affected by a tragic house fire in Tupong Ulu. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of 16 July 2026, involved a two-storey terrace house at Lorong 5 Permai Jaya.
The fire claimed the life of 13-year-old Nurmanisha binti Khamis, while a 14-year-old boy is currently receiving treatment in hospital. The tragedy has left the affected family devastated, prompting DBKU to mobilise immediate assistance as part of its community welfare commitment.
On 17 July 2026, DBKU representatives visited the victims’ families to present aid and offer moral support. The assistance was handed over by Mr Ramli bin Omar Baki, Head of the DBKU Development and Community Services Division. He emphasised that the initiative was a gesture of care and solidarity during a time of hardship.
Joining the visit was Mr Haji Jamain bin Haji Bojet, Head of Kampung Tupong Hulu, who also extended condolences and comfort to the grieving family. Their presence reflected the community’s collective effort to stand by residents in times of crisis.
DBKU highlighted that the CARES programme is designed to provide immediate relief to city residents affected by disasters, emergencies, or unforeseen circumstances. The initiative focuses on easing burdens, offering practical support, and ensuring that affected families do not face challenges alone.
Officials expressed hope that the assistance would help alleviate some of the difficulties faced by the victims’ family. DBKU also conveyed its deepest condolences to the family of the late Nurmanisha, praying for strength and resilience as they cope with the loss of their loved one.
The fire incident has drawn attention to the importance of community solidarity and the role of local authorities in responding swiftly to emergencies. DBKU’s intervention demonstrates how municipal bodies can extend beyond administrative duties to provide humanitarian support.
Community leaders have praised DBKU’s proactive approach, noting that such initiatives foster trust between residents and local authorities. By offering both material aid and emotional support, DBKU CARES reinforces the principle that governance must also encompass compassion and empathy.
The tragedy in Tupong Ulu serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of disasters and the need for preparedness. It also highlights the importance of strong community networks, where neighbours, leaders, and institutions collaborate to provide assistance in times of need.
As Sarawak continues to strengthen its urban management and community welfare programmes, initiatives like DBKU CARES remain vital in ensuring that residents feel supported during crises. The programme reflects DBKU’s broader mission of caring for the welfare of city dwellers and promoting resilience within the community.
