Upgraded Community Facilities Unveiled at RPR Tondong

KUCHING – Significant enhancements to local communal infrastructure were recently highlighted at the People’s Housing Programme estate in Tondong, officially recognised as RPR Taman Sri Cahaya.

UDC Event 2026

On 17 July 2026, attention was drawn to the newly upgraded balairaya and futsal court, which serve as central hubs for the neighbourhood.

The site visit and assessment were attended by key regional figures. Sarawak Deputy Premier Dr Sim Kui Hian, who concurrently holds the position of state assemblyman for the N14 Batu Kawah constituency, was present to observe the facilities.

He was accompanied by YB Ir. Lo Khere Chiang, the elected representative for the neighbouring N13 Batu Kitang district, underscoring the cross-constituency importance of the development.

A defining characteristic of these amenities is their provisional classification. The structures are erected on land presently managed by the Housing Development Corporation.

While the spaces currently function as vital recreational and gathering points, the land is ultimately earmarked for potential future residential projects.

Consequently, the facilities are officially regarded as “temporary” installations, subject to the long-term housing requirements of the state.

Notwithstanding this transitional status, the amenities have proven to be highly valuable to the local populace.

The estate comprises 660 residential flats, and the community has consistently demonstrated strong utilisation of the available spaces.

Recognising this sustained demand, authorities have committed to systematic, phased improvements over the years.

These cumulative enhancement efforts have required a total financial outlay of RM550,000, ensuring the structures remain safe, functional, and fully conducive to regular public use.

Beyond the immediate benefits to residents, the estate enjoys a highly strategic geographical position. The neighbourhood is situated in close proximity to the starting point of the newly constructed second Batu Kawa Bridge.

This major infrastructural addition is designed to alleviate traffic congestion and provide a more direct route for motorists traversing the district.

The completion of the second bridge is anticipated to transform local mobility patterns. By linking key arterial roads, the project will significantly reduce travel times and improve overall accessibility for the wider Batu Kawa area.

As a result, the RPR Tondong locality is poised to become an even more connected and accessible node within the district’s expanding transport network.

The provision of a dedicated futsal court and a comprehensive community hall addresses fundamental social needs within high-density housing environments.

Such spaces are instrumental in promoting physical well-being among youth and offering a structured, secure environment for neighbourhood gatherings and civic activities.

Community leaders have frequently emphasised that accessible recreational facilities are crucial for maintaining social cohesion, reducing antisocial behaviour, and providing constructive, healthy outlets for residents of all ages.

Historically, RPR Taman Sri Cahaya Tondong has been the subject of ongoing municipal attention. Previous initiatives have ranged from essential maintenance, such as the upgrading of rainwater drainage systems across multiple blocks, to community-led cleanliness campaigns.

These efforts reflect a broader commitment to preserving the living standards of the estate’s inhabitants, the vast majority of whom are private owners of their respective units.

Looking ahead, local authorities face the ongoing challenge of balancing immediate community needs with future urban development goals.

While the land may eventually be repurposed for additional housing, the current investments ensure that residents continue to enjoy a satisfactory quality of life.

The recent upgrades stand as a testament to the administration’s focus on delivering tangible improvements to established neighbourhoods, even as broader regional infrastructure projects reshape the surrounding landscape.
