MUKAH – The Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Mukah District Police Headquarters has successfully apprehended two local men suspected of involvement in illicit drug activities.
The operation, conducted on 17 July 2026, underscores the force’s relentless commitment to eradicating substance abuse within the district.
Acting on credible intelligence, police officers executed a targeted raid at approximately 2:30 pm near a shelter surrounded by palm trees along Jalan Bayan Lilli.
The strategic location was identified as a potential hotspot for clandestine transactions, prompting immediate intervention by the authorities.
During the search, the first suspect, a forty-four-year-old unemployed man with a history of prior drug-related offences, was found in possession of illicit substances.
A thorough inspection of his belongings revealed one small packet and a straw tube containing crystal-like lumps, believed to be methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘syabu’. The total gross weight of the confiscated drugs was estimated at 0.41 grams.
The second individual detained was a thirty-year-old heavy machinery driver. Although a physical search of his person did not yield any incriminating items, subsequent forensic procedures confirmed his involvement in drug consumption.
Both individuals were transported to the Mukah District Police Headquarters for further processing and interrogation.
Preliminary urine screening tests conducted on both suspects returned positive results for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
This biological evidence solidified the grounds for legal action against them under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The forty-four-year-old suspect is currently being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Act, which pertains to the possession of controlled substances.
Given his previous criminal record involving similar offences, the magistrate ordered him to be remanded for four days, until 22 July 2026, to facilitate a comprehensive investigation.
In contrast, the thirty-year-old heavy machinery driver is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act, which addresses the act of consuming or administering dangerous drugs.
As he did not possess any drugs during the arrest and is employed, he was released on police bail pending the setting of a prosecution date.
This differential treatment highlights the judicial system’s consideration of individual circumstances and the severity of the offence.
DSP Muhamad Rizal bin Alias, the Chief of Police for the Mukah District, reaffirmed the department’s zero-tolerance stance towards narcotics.
He emphasised that the police remain steadfast in implementing strict measures to dismantle drug networks and protect the community from the detrimental effects of addiction.
The presence of drugs in residential and semi-rural areas poses a significant threat to public order and family stability.
By targeting users and low-level distributors, the authorities aim to disrupt the demand side of the drug trade, thereby reducing the profitability for larger syndicates.
Members of the public are strongly encouraged to assist law enforcement efforts by reporting any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking or abuse.
Information can be channelled directly to the Mukah District Police Headquarters via their hotline at 084-871222. Alternatively, individuals may visit any nearby police station to lodge a formal report.
The identity of informants is strictly confidential, ensuring their safety while they contribute to community welfare.
Such cooperation is vital in helping the police identify new hotspots and prevent the spread of substance abuse among the youth and vulnerable populations.
This recent operation serves as a stern warning to those involved in the illegal drug trade. The legal consequences are severe, ranging from heavy fines and imprisonment to mandatory rehabilitation programmes.
The police hope that these enforcement actions will serve as a deterrent and encourage individuals struggling with addiction to seek professional help.
As investigations continue, the Mukah police force remains vigilant. Regular patrols and intelligence-led operations will be sustained to ensure that the district remains a safe and secure environment for all residents.
The ultimate goal is to foster a society free from the scourge of drugs, allowing communities to thrive without the shadow of addiction.
