Miri Man Fined RM4,700 for Methamphetamine Possession

MIRI – A fifty-two-year-old local man has been sentenced by the Miri Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to charges of possessing dangerous drugs. The court imposed a fine of RM4,700, with an alternative sentence of six months’ imprisonment should he fail to pay the penalty.

The conviction stems from an offence committed under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The defendant was found in possession of 2.88 grams of methamphetamine, commonly referred to as ‘syabu’, a highly addictive stimulant that remains a primary focus of law enforcement efforts across Sarawak.

The case originated from a police raid conducted on 22 February 2026 at a residential property in Kampung Bakam, Miri.

Acting on intelligence regarding suspected drug abuse activities in the area, officers from the Miri District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division executed a search of the premises.

During the operation, authorities discovered and seized several items believed to be used for the consumption and storage of illicit substances.

The confiscated evidence included three transparent plastic packets, eight cut sections of straws of various sizes, and one green straw section. These items contained crystal-like lumps suspected to be methamphetamine.

The total gross weight of the seized drugs was recorded at 5.20 grams, with an estimated street value of RM600. While the charge was based on the 2.88 grams attributed directly to the accused’s personal possession, the broader seizure indicated a pattern of regular use.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the defendant had been involved in drug abuse since early 2016. He admitted to sourcing his supply from within the Bakam area, highlighting the persistent availability of narcotics in certain local communities despite ongoing enforcement operations.

The Miri District Police Chief used this case to issue a stern warning to the public. He emphasised that involvement in dangerous drug activities carries severe legal consequences, including the possibility of life imprisonment for more serious offences such as trafficking.

The judiciary’s imposition of both financial and custodial penalties serves as a deterrent to potential offenders.

However, authorities recognise that punishment alone is insufficient. Rehabilitation and community support are crucial in helping long-term users break the cycle of addiction and reintegrate into society.

Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking or abuse. Information can be channelled to the Miri District Police Headquarters or the nearest police station.

Such cooperation is vital in helping law enforcement agencies dismantle distribution networks and protect vulnerable individuals from the harms of substance abuse. The fight against drugs requires a collective effort from all sectors of society.

By maintaining open lines of communication with the police and supporting preventive education initiatives, communities can create a safer environment free from the scourge of narcotics.

This sentencing also reflects the consistent approach of the Malaysian legal system in dealing with drug possession cases.

While the penalties may vary based on the quantity and type of substance, the overarching goal remains the protection of public health and safety.

As the district continues to grow, the challenge of managing social issues such as drug abuse becomes increasingly complex.

The police force remains committed to adapting its strategies to meet these challenges, ensuring that Miri remains a secure and prosperous city for all residents.
