MIRI – A twenty-five-year-old local man has been handed a six-month prison sentence and fined RM1,500 by the Miri Magistrate’s Court after admitting to concealing stolen property.
The defendant pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which relates to dishonestly receiving or retaining stolen goods.
The case centred on a blue Honda Dash motorcycle that was reported missing from a residential area in Tudan Lot.
The incident came to light on 22 July 2026, when the owner’s wife discovered the vehicle had vanished from the parking space in front of their home at Jalan Mulia 8. Suspecting theft, she immediately filed a police report to initiate an investigation.
Acting on intelligence gathered during Operation Lejang, a targeted police initiative, officers were able to trace the suspect’s whereabouts within two days.
On the evening of 24 July 2026, at approximately 8.00 pm, a police team raided an empty house located at Jalan Harmoni in Tudan Phase 6.
Upon entering the premises, authorities found the accused in the process of dismantling the stolen motorcycle.
It appeared he was breaking down the components with the intention of disposing of them to obscure the evidence of the theft.
The swift action of the police team prevented the complete destruction of the vehicle and led to the immediate arrest of the suspect.
During the court proceedings, the magistrate considered the circumstances of the offence and the defendant’s guilty plea before delivering the sentence.
In addition to the custodial term, the court imposed a fine of RM1,500. Such penalties are intended to serve as a deterrent against those who aid criminals by hiding or selling stolen items.
Following the conclusion of the case, the Miri District Police Chief issued a statement urging residents to remain vigilant regarding the security of their personal property.
