LUBOK ANTU – The Civil Defence Force (APM) in Lubok Antu successfully neutralised a significant public safety hazard after responding to an emergency call regarding a large wasp nest.
The operation took place at the GIATMARA vocational training centre, ensuring the safety of staff and students at the facility.
The incident began when a worker, engaged in routine grass-cutting maintenance on the premises, noticed unusual activity in the area.
Several wasps were observed flying aggressively near the ground, raising immediate concerns for the safety of the worker and his colleagues. Recognising the potential danger, the individual promptly contacted the APM for professional assistance.
Upon receiving the report, the Lubok Antu District Operations Control Center (PKOD) dispatched a rapid response team.
Three members from the MyASPA-O Charlie unit were deployed to the location to assess the situation and carry out the necessary removal procedures.
Upon arrival, the APM team confirmed the presence of a substantial wasp nest located directly on the ground.
The size of the nest was estimated to be comparable to that of a motorcycle tyre, indicating a well-established colony with a potentially large number of aggressive insects.
Such nests pose a serious threat, as ground-dwelling wasps can be particularly defensive when their territory is disturbed.
To mitigate the risk effectively, the officers employed controlled burning techniques to destroy the nest. This method was chosen to ensure the complete elimination of the colony while minimising the chance of escaped wasps attacking nearby individuals.
The operation was conducted with strict adherence to safety protocols, ensuring that the fire remained contained and did not spread to surrounding vegetation.
The destruction process was completed safely and under control, with no injuries reported among the APM personnel or the workers at GIATMARA.
Following the successful neutralisation of the threat, all team members returned to the PKOD in good condition, with their equipment intact and ready for future deployments.
