BAU – The spirit of camaraderie and physical wellness took centre stage in Bau as the 2026 Community Sports Carnival concluded with great success.
Held at the Orad Grogo Grounds, the event served as a vibrant gathering point for residents of all ages, highlighting the dual benefits of recreational activity: improved personal health and strengthened social cohesion.
The carnival provided a platform for locals to engage in various sports, fostering a sense of belonging and collective pride within the district.
The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mordi Bimol, officiated the closing ceremony, emphasising that the true value of sport extends beyond competitive victory.
He articulated a vision where athletic activities serve as a powerful vehicle for social integration, cooperation, and friendship building.
The event’s theme, ‘Together, Energize Sports, Unite the Community’, encapsulated the government’s broader strategy to utilise sports culture as a tool for community empowerment.
Mordi noted that the initiative aligns closely with the aspirations of the MADANI Malaysia framework. This national policy prioritises the well-being of citizens, the development of human capital, and the creation of an inclusive society.
By promoting active lifestyles, the government aims to cultivate a healthier population while simultaneously breaking down social barriers.
The overwhelming participation observed during the carnival demonstrated that sports can effectively bridge gaps across age, gender, and cultural backgrounds.
“Sports is not just a field of competition to grab victory, but rather a vehicle capable of uniting the community, fostering the spirit of cooperation and strengthening friendships,” he said.
The Deputy Minister expressed profound gratitude to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, specifically the Sarawak State Youth and Sports Department, for their organisational efforts.
He also acknowledged the indispensable contributions of community leaders, sports associations, technical officers, referees, volunteers, and local residents.
Their collective dedication was cited as the primary factor behind the event’s smooth execution and positive reception.
While celebrating competitive achievements, Mordi reminded attendees that maintaining a healthy lifestyle does not require formal athletic training.
He encouraged the public to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines through simple actions such as walking, jogging, cycling, or exercising with family members.
These accessible forms of movement can significantly contribute to long-term health without the pressure of formal competition.
A significant portion of the address was directed towards the youth demographic. Mordi urged young people to remain actively involved in community programmes, whether as participants, volunteers, or organisers.
He highlighted that their engagement is crucial for nurturing a progressive society characterised by leadership skills and a competitive spirit.

The ceremony was attended by several key figures, including Lamat Nyalau, the Director of the Sarawak State Youth and Sports Department, and ASP Mohd Shahir Md Padzil, representing the Bau District Police Chief.
Community elders, tribal leaders, and residents from the Grogo area were also present, underscoring the broad-based support for initiatives that bring people together through shared physical activity.
