KUCHING – A major international cultural sporting event is set to commence this weekend in the state capital, bringing together elite performers from across the region. The Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Multi-Purpose Hall in Batu Kawa will serve as the venue for the Sarawak Open International Dragon and Lion Dance Cup 2026.
This prestigious championship runs over two days, specifically on 8 and 9 August, promising a vibrant display of traditional artistry and athletic precision for all attendees.
The tournament has attracted significant regional interest, with forty-four top-tier teams confirmed to compete. Participants have travelled from Malaysia, China, Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore to test their skills on this international stage.
The competition is officially recognised by the Dragon and Lion Dance Federation of Malaysia and organised by the Chinese Martial Art Association. Such high-level endorsement ensures that the judging criteria and performance standards meet rigorous international benchmarks.
Spectators can expect to witness excellence across four distinct competitive categories. These include Northern Lion Dance, High Pole Southern Lion Dance, Luminous Dragon Dance, and Traditional Southern Lion Dance.
Each category requires unique technical abilities and artistic expression, offering a comprehensive showcase of the discipline’s diversity.
The variety ensures that audiences will experience both the acrobatic intensity of high pole routines and the intricate storytelling of traditional performances.
Several reigning champions are slated to appear, raising the competitive stakes considerably. The current world champions in Luminous Dragon Dance from Johor will be performing, alongside the defending High Pole Southern Lion Dance titleholders from China.
Their presence guarantees a high calibre of performance throughout the event. Additionally, local pride will be on display as the host association’s Northern Lion Dance team attempts to retain the title they secured during the previous year’s championship.

The evening session features the visually striking Luminous Dragon Dance, which runs from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm. Sunday, 9 August, is dedicated entirely to the Traditional Southern Lion Dance category, with performances scheduled from 9.00 am through to 6.00 pm.
Chester Lim, who serves as both the organising chairman and president of the Chinese Martial Art Association, highlighted the strong institutional backing for this year’s cup. He noted that the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts has extended its full support to the initiative.
