BEAUFORT (Aug 6): Three policemen from the Weston Police Station in Beaufort, Sabah, died after they were electrocuted while reportedly trying to retrieve coconuts using a metal pole that came into contact with an overhead power line at Kampung Weston on Thursday evening.
The tragic incident happened at about 5.50pm, with preliminary investigations indicating that the long metal pole used by the officers accidentally touched an electricity cable, causing a fatal electric shock.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the metal pole was believed to have lost balance while the officers were attempting to collect coconuts.
“Two other officers attempted to assist their colleague but were also electrocuted,” he said when contacted.
The victims were identified as Corporal Chiu Teck Siong, 40; Lance Corporal Mohamad Nur Hafiz Ibrahim, 29; and Lance Corporal Muhammad Raimi Ismarubee, 26. All three officers were attached to the Weston Police Station.
They were pronounced dead at the scene following the incident. Their bodies were later taken to Beaufort Hospital for post-mortem examinations before being released to their respective families.
The Sabah Police Commissioner said police have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the incident.
The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said it received an emergency call regarding the incident at 5.56pm and immediately sent a team of seven firefighters from the Beaufort station to the location.
Upon arrival, firefighters worked together with police personnel to manage the situation. The power supply in the area was disconnected by Sabah Electricity to ensure the scene was safe before recovery operations began.
The operation was brought under control at about 7pm and fully completed at 7.45pm.
The incident has shocked the local community, especially residents of Kampung Weston and members of the police force. Authorities are expected to provide further updates once investigations into the electrocution incident are completed.
The tragedy also serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by overhead power lines, especially when handling long metal objects near electrical infrastructure. Members of the public are advised to exercise caution and avoid approaching power lines during activities involving poles, ladders, or other extended equipment.
The loss of the three officers is a heavy blow to the Weston Police Station and their families, who are now mourning the passing of their loved ones.
