SPAOH – A concerted drive to establish Bukit Saban as a primary centre for hybrid poultry production in Sarawak gathered significant momentum this week. Local stakeholders convened for a strategic engagement session aimed at bolstering the sector’s capacity and sustainability within the region.
The meeting was presided over by Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who serves as both Deputy Premier and the elected representative for the N.37 Bukit Saban constituency. His presence underscored the high priority placed on agricultural development in the area.
A total of 26 local hybrid chicken farmers participated in the dialogue, demonstrating strong community interest in advancing the industry. Their attendance highlighted a collective willingness to engage with policymakers and technical experts to improve farming outcomes.
Key officials from relevant agencies also joined the proceedings to provide technical insight and administrative support. These included Leo Toni from the Betong Division Agriculture Office and Tony Malang representing the Sarawak Public Communications Unit for the division.
Low Kok Leong, the Project Manager for GWG Debak Station, was similarly present to facilitate discussions on infrastructure and operational logistics. This multi-agency approach ensured that various aspects of the supply chain were adequately addressed during the session.
Deliberations centred on comprehensive strategies to fortify the hybrid chicken farming ecosystem. Topics ranged from improving chick breed genetics and expanding production volumes to refining marketing channels and securing essential support infrastructure.
During his address, the Deputy Premier expressed satisfaction regarding the dedication displayed by the attending farmers. He characterised their commitment as a vital component in transforming poultry rearing into a reliable revenue stream for rural households.
“I am pleased to see the seriousness shown by the participants in farming hybrid chickens. With continued commitment and effort, I am confident that this field can develop as a main source of income for rural communities,” he stated.
Beyond enthusiasm, practical farm management standards were emphasised as non-negotiable elements for success. Participants were urged to maintain appropriate coop densities relative to livestock numbers and to rigorously implement biosecurity protocols to safeguard animal health and product quality.
A significant infrastructural proposal discussed involved constructing a dedicated slaughterhouse within Bukit Saban. Such a facility would complete the local industrial chain, enabling systematic and compliant processing whilst reducing reliance on external facilities.
Farmers utilised the forum to voice specific operational challenges requiring attention. Primary concerns included access to high-quality feed and fertiliser, alongside pest infestations damaging corn and sweet potato crops intended for livestock consumption.
Addressing these issues, leadership stressed that sectoral growth must transcend mere increases in bird numbers. Instead, development should encompass the entire value chain, from breeding and rearing through to processing and final market distribution.
“I hope that breeders will focus more seriously on this industry because its prospects are very bright. At the same time, we need to develop a complete ecosystem starting from chick breed development, farming, processing to marketing so that more value can be created at the local level and increase returns for breeders,” he remarked.
Achieving the ambition of making Bukit Saban a leading supplier necessitates alignment between private enterprise and public policy. Sustained government backing and inter-agency cooperation were identified as critical enablers alongside breeder dedication.
“I want to see Bukit Saban emerge as one of the main suppliers of hybrid chickens in Sarawak. With the commitment of breeders, government support and the strategic facilities it has, I am confident that this target can be realised,” he affirmed.
Connectivity infrastructure was also cited as a future catalyst for commercial expansion. The Bebuling Short Runway Airport in nearby Spaoh is expected to enhance market access for local entrepreneurs, thereby boosting competitiveness and creating avenues for scaling operations.
Ultimately, this ongoing initiative seeks to build a resilient agricultural ecosystem rather than isolated projects. By integrating breeding, husbandry, processing, and sales, the strategy aligns with broader objectives of enhancing food security and stimulating rural economic vitality.
