The Batu Kawah Riverbank Park, situated just 20 minutes from the bustling heart of Kuching, is rapidly becoming a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike. This expansive park, developed in five phases, is a significant investment in the community’s recreational infrastructure, boasting a total cost of RM8.8 million. The project is spearheaded by the Padawan Municipal Council, aiming to transform the area into a vibrant, sustainable, and family-friendly environment.
Phase 1, known as “The Window of Batu Kawa,” features a unique 8-story high scenic viewpoint. This phase is entirely funded by the Sarawak Government, offering visitors a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.
Funded by the Sarawak Government, Phase 2 includes a walkway connecting the Batu Kawa Old Bazaar to Kampung Rantau Panjang. This scenic 2km walkway allows visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll while appreciating the park’s natural beauty.
Phase 3, which is set to be completed by February 2024, will link Phases 1 and 4 and include various sports facilities. These include skateboarding, pickleball, pétanque, table tennis, and 3×3 basketball courts. This phase aims to promote physical activities and enhance community engagement.
The Federal Government funds Phase 4, which focuses on creating recreational facilities for children. This phase is designed to ensure that the park caters to all age groups, providing a safe and enjoyable environment for families.
Phase 5, funded by the Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), involves riverbank protection works at Kampung Rantau Panjang and Kampung Sinar Budi Lama. This phase aims to enhance the park’s sustainability and protect the riverbank from erosion.
The centerpiece of Batu Kawah Riverbank Park is undoubtedly the Sky Bridge, also known as the Sky Window. This 10-story, 30-tonne, 100-foot-long sky deck offers visitors a breathtaking view of Batu Kawah and the Sarawak River. Open daily from 8 AM to 10 PM, the Sky Bridge is a perfect spot for capturing stunning photographs and enjoying the scenic vista. Security personnel ensure that visitors adhere to the closing time, with the bridge closing at 9:45 PM.
Surrounding the Sky Bridge are several fascinating structures, including preserved wetlands, the Galaxy Bridge, and the Seven Fairies art installation. These attractions add to the park’s charm and offer visitors unique and memorable experiences.
The upcoming completion of Phase 3 will see the introduction of a sensual glass bridge over Sungai Moyan, further enhancing the park’s appeal. This phase will also link the park to nearby shops, providing visitors with more amenities and convenience.
With Phase 4 already underway and Phase 5 in the pipeline, Batu Kawah Riverbank Park is set to become one of the largest freshwater wetland parks in Malaysia. Once fully completed, the park will offer a comprehensive recreational experience, catering to diverse interests and age groups.
Currently, the most convenient way to reach Batu Kawah Riverbank Park is by private car or taxi, as public transportation in Kuching remains limited. Although public buses do not service the park, ample parking is available for visitors driving to the location.
While Batu Kawah Riverbank Park is still under development, its existing facilities and attractions already make it a must-visit destination in Kuching. The park promises to offer even more once fully completed, providing a sustainable and enjoyable recreational space for all.
