ASAJAYA – A roadside fire broke out along the Asajaya-Sadong Jaya route on Tuesday, charring a stretch of undergrowth estimated at 100 feet in length.
Fire crews from the Asajaya Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Asajaya) were immediately dispatched to Jalan Kampung Jemukan Ulu following an emergency alert.
The incident was logged on 11 August 2026. A Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT Atego) bearing registration plate BJU 5996 was deployed to the scene.
The Alpha Team response unit operated under the command of PBK I Suhardi bin Razali. Driver PBK II Yahya bin Marasit handled the vehicle, while firefighters PBB Sahrizan bin Sahat and PBB Mohd Hamidullah bin Jamain made up the rest of the team.
Upon arrival, the crew found the flames advancing through dry vegetation along the side of the road. No structures or cultivated land were directly threatened by the blaze.
Acting swiftly, the personnel utilised the auxiliary water tank mounted on their machinery. They doused the flames completely using the onboard supply, eliminating the need to search for an external water source.
The fire was fully extinguished by the crew without incident. After the flames were knocked down, the team conducted a meticulous inspection of the affected area.
They verified that all embers had been cooled and that no risk of re-ignition existed. With the scene declared safe, the firefighters returned to their station.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, but such incidents are common during spells of dry weather in the coastal districts east of Kuching.
Asajaya and its surrounding areas, including Sadong Jaya, are predominantly rural with vast expanses of parched grassland and scrub that can easily ignite.
Fire authorities continuously stress the importance of preventive measures, such as refraining from indiscriminate open burning and keeping land clear of excessive dry debris.
The use of the auxiliary water tank in this operation highlights its value in locations where hydrants or natural water sources are not immediately accessible.
The LFRT Atego is designed for mobility in semi-rural landscapes, ensuring a rapid attack capability that can stop a small vegetation fire before it spreads out of control.
