Gas Distribution Between Petronas and Petros Resolved, Says PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 12 – The long-standing discussions over gas distribution in Sarawak between Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) have finally reached a resolution, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“Discussion is settled, but we are looking into details, parameters, and legal implications of it,” said Anwar, following what he described as a productive meeting with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Abang Johari had earlier hinted that the decision had been made but left it to the prime minister to disclose the specifics of the distribution formula. “I leave it to the PM to announce the details. Just wait,” he told reporters at the 4th Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Conference.

In a separate interview with TVSarawak, Abang Johari mentioned that the legal frameworks governing gas distribution – the Petroleum Development Act 1974, which guides Petronas, and Sarawak’s Oil Mining Ordinance 1958 – can coexist peacefully. This legal clarity reportedly played a key role in resolving the issue.

The settlement marks a significant milestone for Sarawak, which has been advocating greater control over its natural resources. The final details, once announced, are expected to strengthen Sarawak’s autonomy in managing its energy sector.
