Teen Cyclists Disciplined with Squats for Reckless Riding in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty-one teenagers, aged 14 to 17, faced discipline for reckless cycling during a roadblock on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. The incident, which took place as part of the Operation New Year’s Eve 2025 initiative, involved the teens riding modified bicycles without essential safety features like brakes, bells, or lights.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa stated that the teenagers’ actions violated Road Traffic Rules (Rule 42) LN 165/59. Their modified bicycles could also be confiscated under Section 112 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Rather than legal action, a senior JSPT officer, in collaboration with a Road Transport Department (JPJ) officer, opted for an unconventional disciplinary measure. The teenagers were instructed to perform ‘ketuk ketampi’ (squats) on the spot.

“This method was chosen as a form of advocacy and deterrence. It serves as a warning to the offenders, helping them understand the importance of road safety laws,” Mohd Zamzuri explained in a statement.

After completing the squats, the teenagers apologised to the officers and promised to refrain from reckless behaviour in the future. They were instructed to return home immediately.

A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, with netizens praising the creative approach by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and JPJ. Many commended the officers for prioritising education and awareness over legal action.

Mohd Zamzuri emphasised the importance of such advocacy measures in preventing road accidents and raising awareness among youth. “Parents and guardians must monitor their children to ensure they follow the law and prioritise safety,” he urged.
