KUCHING (Jan 16): Residents of a quiet neighbourhood at Jalan Depot in Kuching were jolted awake early this morning by a shocking series of attacks, leaving cars damaged and a house partially burned.
According to eyewitness accounts, at least two unidentified individuals wreaked havoc by smashing car windscreens and throwing Molotov cocktails into the compound of a residence. The attacks caused a fire that engulfed the front portion of the property and a vehicle parked nearby.
Jeffrey Sheffrie, a resident and eyewitness, shared his experience on Facebook, stating, “Luckily, only the front part of the house was torched, and Bomba (Fire and Rescue Department) managed to extinguish the fire quickly.” Firefighters reportedly arrived at the scene around 3am, preventing further damage.
Jeffrey speculated that the attacks could have been a result of personal revenge or a neighbourhood grudge. “It’s quite scary, and we have to be vigilant. This incident reminds me of the old days when we had a neighbourhood watch to safeguard our area. Unfortunately, that sense of unity is no longer there,” he lamented.
The police and Bomba have been alerted to the incident, and an investigation is underway. Kuching police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah assured residents that a formal statement will be issued soon.
Residents are calling for increased vigilance and security measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
