SARATOK: More than 130 residents of Rumah Tembawai Kapok, Awit, have been evacuated to a temporary relief centre (PPS) at Dewan Rumah Dayak here after their longhouse was submerged in floodwaters today (Jan 19).
The Civil Defence Force (APM) confirmed that the relief centre was officially opened at 3.30 pm to accommodate the displaced residents.
APM Saratok, together with local firefighters, responded to an emergency call at 1.45 pm and immediately dispatched a team to the affected area. Upon arrival, they discovered that the 21-door longhouse was submerged under approximately 1.24 metres of water, with the water level steadily rising due to persistent rainfall.
The situation has also made most roads leading to the longhouse impassable, further complicating rescue and evacuation efforts. As of now, the exact number of affected residents has not been confirmed as the evacuation process is still ongoing.
Authorities are closely monitoring the flood situation and working tirelessly to ensure the safety of those affected. Residents in nearby areas are urged to remain vigilant and prepare for possible evacuations should water levels continue to rise.
