BINTULU (Jan 22) – A longhouse headman from Kapit Division has been placed under remand for five days to assist the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in investigating alleged misappropriation of funds amounting to over RM200,000.
Magistrate Galvin Loo Wei Ling granted the remand order at the Magistrates’ Court here today following the MACC’s application. The 58-year-old suspect was detained at 7:30 pm yesterday at the MACC Bintulu office.
According to reliable sources, the suspect is accused of abusing his position and failing to distribute compensation and timber commission funds to more than 100 longhouse residents between 2019 and 2022.
The MACC is investigating the matter under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which deals with the abuse of power for personal gain.
Appearing for the commission, MACC investigating officer ASupt Muhammad Shahfiruddin Md Darim presented the case. It was noted that the suspect did not have legal representation during the court proceedings.
This case highlights the MACC’s commitment to addressing corruption and ensuring that public funds are used for their intended purpose, particularly in rural areas where financial resources are critical for community development.
The investigation is ongoing, and the MACC is expected to gather further evidence to substantiate the allegations.
