KUALA LUMPUR – His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and Her Majesty the Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah attended the State Welcome Ceremony for the President of Singapore, His Excellency Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and his spouse Mrs Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam at Istana Negara on 13 July 2026.
The ceremony marked the beginning of the Singaporean leader’s official state visit to Malaysia, which follows Sultan Ibrahim’s own visit to Singapore in May 2024.
This reciprocal engagement highlights the close ties between the two neighbouring nations and reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.
Among those present at the ceremony were members of the Johor royal family, including YAM Tunku Tun Aminah Binti Sultan Ibrahim, YB Dato’ Dennis Muhammad Bin Abdullah, YAM Tunku Abdul Rahman Al-Haj Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, Tunku Panglima Johor, and YAM Tunku Abu Bakar Al-Haj Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, Tunku Putera Johor.
Senior government leaders also attended, including Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Ministers Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, as well as Cabinet Ministers such as YB Steven Sim.
The national welcome ceremony began with the playing of the national anthems of both countries by the Central Band of the Royal Malay Regiment.
This was followed by a 21-gun salute performed by the 41st Battery of the Royal Artillery Regiment, a traditional gesture of respect accorded to visiting heads of state.
President Tharman then inspected the Guard of Honour, which comprised four officers and 103 personnel from the 1st Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, led by Major Mohd Masrur Hidayat Masri.
Following the ceremonial proceedings, Their Majesties held a meeting with President Tharman, Mrs Jane Ittogi, and the Singaporean delegation at the Seri Maharaja’s Hall.
The meeting included the presentation of commemorative souvenirs, symbolising the friendship and cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore.
Later in the evening, Their Majesties hosted a State Banquet at the Main Dining Hall of Istana Negara, where both sides exchanged goodwill and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties.
This visit marks the fourth official state visit received by Sultan Ibrahim since his ascension as Malaysia’s 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Previous visits included the Sultan of Brunei, the President of the People’s Republic of China, and the President of Indonesia. Each occasion has underscored Malaysia’s role in fostering regional diplomacy and building bridges with key partners.
Singapore and Malaysia share deep historical, cultural, and economic links. The two countries are major trading partners, with Singapore consistently ranking among Malaysia’s top investors.
The state visit is expected to further discussions on cooperation in areas such as trade, education, and security, while also reinforcing people-to-people connections across the Johor-Singapore border.
The presence of Malaysia’s top leadership at the ceremony reflects the importance placed on the relationship with Singapore.
Both nations continue to work closely within ASEAN and other international platforms, addressing shared challenges and opportunities in the region.
The State Welcome Ceremony at Istana Negara not only honoured the visiting President but also symbolised Malaysia’s commitment to diplomacy, respect, and regional unity.
The visit is anticipated to pave the way for deeper collaboration and mutual understanding between the two countries.
