Malaysia and Thailand Open New Bukit Kayu Hitam–Sadao Road

BUKIT KAYU HITAM – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Thai Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul officiated the opening of a new road linking Malaysia’s Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex (ICQS) with Thailand’s Sadao Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ).

The new route is expected to strengthen connectivity between the two countries, enhance trade flows, and ease the movement of people across the border. Bukit Kayu Hitam–Sadao is already recognised as the busiest land trade gateway between Malaysia and Thailand, and the latest development is anticipated to accelerate economic growth in the region.

Prime Minister Anwar reflected on the historical significance of the area, noting that the Malay Peninsula has long been described as a golden land by ancient geographers and poets. Ptolemy referred to it as the Golden Peninsula, while traders called it Suvarnabhumi. Centuries later, English poet John Milton described it as the Golden Chersonese. These references highlight the region’s enduring role as a hub of trade and civilisation.

During the meeting, Malaysia and Thailand reaffirmed their commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation. Both governments agreed to expedite the development of the Border Special Economic Zone, resolve outstanding technical matters, and work towards achieving a bilateral trade target of USD30 billion by 2027.

The benefits of the new road and related initiatives are expected to extend beyond the immediate border areas. Economic growth is projected to spread across Kedah, Perlis, Penang, Perak and Kelantan, driven by increased trade, investment, logistics, tourism and employment opportunities.

Prime Minister Anwar emphasised that the MADANI Government’s approach is to ensure that strategic partnerships translate into tangible benefits for citizens. He stressed that governance reforms and responsible management of resources are central to ensuring prosperity and public trust.

“The opening of this new road reflects the determination of both countries to strengthen connectivity, accelerate trade flows and facilitate the movement of people,” he said, adding that Malaysia and Thailand will continue to build relations that foster peace, prosperity and well-being.

The ceremony marks another milestone in Malaysia–Thailand relations, which have historically been characterised by strong cultural, economic and social ties. The new infrastructure is expected to further consolidate cooperation, positioning both nations to benefit from regional trade opportunities and global economic shifts.

Observers note that the initiative aligns with Malaysia’s broader strategy of leveraging cross-border partnerships to stimulate growth. By focusing on infrastructure, trade facilitation and economic zones, the government aims to create sustainable opportunities for communities while reinforcing Malaysia’s role as a regional hub.

The Bukit Kayu Hitam–Sadao development is seen as a practical step towards achieving shared prosperity. With enhanced connectivity and a clear roadmap for economic collaboration, Malaysia and Thailand are poised to deepen their partnership in ways that will benefit both nations for years to come.
