KAPIT – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Kapit successfully captured a spitting cobra inside a residential bathroom on 19 May 2026, following an emergency call from the public.
The District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) received the alert at 1.26 pm, reporting the presence of a snake in the complainant’s home.
A team of five members was immediately dispatched with full equipment and logistics to handle the situation.
Upon arrival, the team carefully inspected the bathroom and located the reptile, which measured approximately one metre in length and was the size of a human thumb in thickness.
Using the pincer technique, the Civil Defence personnel managed to secure the cobra without incident. The operation was carried out smoothly, and no untoward events occurred during the capture.
The snake was removed from the premises and taken for further action, ensuring the safety of the household and surrounding community.
Spitting cobras, though relatively small in size, are venomous and can pose serious risks if encountered in residential areas. Their ability to eject venom makes them particularly dangerous, especially in confined spaces such as bathrooms.
Authorities continue to advise residents not to attempt handling snakes themselves but to contact emergency services immediately.
APM Kapit reaffirmed its commitment to its guiding principles of “Always with Civil Defence” and “Ready, Fast, and Integrity,” highlighting its role in safeguarding communities against wildlife threats.
The unit regularly responds to KMU (wildlife-related emergencies), reflecting its broad responsibilities in ensuring public safety.
Residents are reminded that in the event of emergencies, they can contact the PKOD APM Kapit hotline at 084-796330, which operates 24 hours a day, or use the national emergency line 999.
These channels remain vital for ensuring rapid intervention in both medical and wildlife-related cases. This incident underscores Sarawak’s rich biodiversity and the challenges of coexisting with wildlife in rural and semi-urban areas.
Civil Defence units across the state remain prepared to respond to such emergencies, reinforcing public safety while respecting the natural environment.
