MATU – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in the Matu District successfully captured a ringed snake measuring approximately 1.5 metres after receiving an emergency call from the public on 17 May 2026.
The District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) was alerted to the incident at a residence in Kampung Tian, where the reptile had entered an animal cage. Concerned residents immediately contacted APM Matu for assistance.
Upon arrival, Civil Defence personnel were guided to the location by the complainant. The team prepared the necessary equipment before carefully carrying out the capture operation. The snake was secured without incident, and the situation was declared safe.
Wildlife-related emergencies such as this are categorised as KMU cases, reflecting the Civil Defence Force’s role in handling animal intrusions alongside other emergencies.
The successful operation highlights the unit’s readiness to respond to diverse threats, ensuring the safety of both residents and animals.
Ringed snakes, while not uncommon in Sarawak’s rural areas, can cause alarm when they appear near homes or livestock.
Authorities emphasise the importance of contacting emergency services rather than attempting to handle such situations independently, as trained personnel are equipped to manage potential risks.
The Civil Defence Force continues to encourage public vigilance and swift reporting of wildlife encounters.
By contacting authorities promptly, residents enable rapid intervention, reducing danger and restoring safety to affected communities.
APM Matu reaffirmed its commitment to its guiding principle of “Ready, Fast, With Integrity”, underscoring its dedication to safeguarding communities across the district.
Residents are reminded that in the event of emergencies, they can reach the PKOD APM Matu District at 084-832208 or use the national emergency line 999. These channels remain vital for ensuring timely assistance in both medical and wildlife-related cases.
This incident reflects Sarawak’s broader efforts to balance human activity with its rich biodiversity. Civil defence units across the state remain prepared to respond to emergencies, reinforcing public safety while respecting the natural environment.
