NAY PYI TAW – The 31st ASEAN Transport Ministers’ Meeting (ATM) convened in Myanmar’s capital, bringing together regional leaders to review progress under the Kuala Lumpur Transport Strategic Plan (KLTSP) 2016–2025 and to set new priorities for the next decade of cooperation.
Chaired by Myanmar’s Union Minister of Transport and Communications U Mya Tun Oo, with the Philippines serving as Vice-Chair, the meeting underscored ASEAN’s commitment to strengthening connectivity, sustainability, and resilience in the transport sector.
The gathering was also attended by Myanmar Prime Minister U Nyo Saw, who highlighted transport as a vital link for economic activities and socio-economic development.
The ministers concluded the end-review of the KLTSP, noting achievements in aviation, maritime, land transport, and logistics.
These included improved air connectivity, harmonised safety standards, and progress in cross-border transport agreements. However, they also acknowledged gaps that must be addressed to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth.
Ahead of the ATM, consultations were held with dialogue partners including China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, reflecting ASEAN’s broader engagement in transport cooperation.
These discussions focused on enhancing regional networks, digitalisation, and green mobility, aligning ASEAN’s transport agenda with global trends in decarbonisation and smart mobility.
Looking forward, the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to drafting a new strategic framework for 2026–2035.
This framework will prioritise sustainability, digital transformation, and resilience against disruptions such as pandemics and climate-related events.
The emphasis on green mobility and smart technologies reflects ASEAN’s ambition to remain competitive while addressing environmental challenges.
The 31st ATM marked a milestone as ASEAN transitions from its current strategic plan to a new era of transport cooperation.
By reinforcing regional connectivity and embracing innovation, ASEAN aims to ensure that transport continues to serve as a driver of integration, prosperity, and resilience across Southeast Asia.
