MARUDI – The Baram Regatta 2026 has once again proven to be far more than a traditional boat racing competition. Held on 25 July along the riverbanks of Marudi, the event served as a powerful symbol of cultural convergence, bringing together diverse ethnic communities in a spirit of peace and mutual respect.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg highlighted that the true essence of the regatta lies in its unique ability to unite people from various backgrounds towards a shared objective. He described the gathering as a living manifestation of harmony, where cultural differences are celebrated rather than divided.
The Premier noted that hosting the event in the developed Marudi Bank area reflects the significant transformation underway in the Baram region. This progress aligns with the state government’s ongoing commitment to uplift infrastructure and quality of life in northern Sarawak, ensuring that rural areas benefit from modern development while preserving their heritage.
Addressing broader state priorities, Abang Johari emphasised that global climate change has necessitated a shift towards sustainable economic models. He stated that Sarawak is actively pursuing renewable energy initiatives and a low-carbon economy, including hydrogen exploration and enhancing the value of methane gas resources, to ensure environmentally responsible growth.
He stressed that such ambitious economic transformation requires a solid foundation of social unity. Without strong cohesion among the people, the benefits of development cannot be equitably shared or sustained. The regatta, therefore, acts as both a cultural celebration and a reminder of the collective responsibility needed to drive the state forward.
Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil pointed out that this year’s edition attracted participants from beyond Baram. Teams arrived from Brunei Darussalam as well as Lawas, Sibuti, Mukah, Dalat, Belaga, and Miri, demonstrating the event’s expanding regional influence and cross-border appeal.
Datuk Dr Penguang urged all parties to maintain peace through tolerance and social inclusion. He argued that community harmony is a prerequisite for effective development implementation, noting that stability allows government projects to proceed smoothly and benefit everyone without disruption.
Competition on the water was fierce, featuring five main trophies across various categories for wooden and fibre boats. The Lakin Belaga Uma Kahei team claimed victory in the prestigious Sarawak Premier Cup Unlimited Rowing Boat category, securing RM15,000 in cash and the championship trophy. Their win added a thrilling sporting dimension to the day’s cultural festivities.
The event drew a distinguished lineup of officials, underscoring its importance to the state administration. Among those present were Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.
Also in attendance were Deputy Minister of Women, Children and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus and Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala. Their presence signalled high-level support for preserving indigenous traditions alongside modern governance.
Local representation was strong with Baram Member of Parliament Dato Anyi Ngau and Telang Usan Assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau joining the celebrations. Their engagement with constituents during the regatta reinforces the connection between elected representatives and the communities they serve.
