KUCHING, July 11 — Malaysian homegrown fashion brand Bayu Somerset has reached a major milestone with the opening of its first outlet in East Malaysia at Vivacity Megamall, Kuching, as the company celebrates its fifth anniversary and continues its nationwide expansion.
The launch of the new outlet marks Bayu Somerset’s 18th store in Malaysia and represents the brand’s first step into the Borneo market. Founded in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic as an online fashion label, the company has grown rapidly over the past five years, serving more than 500,000 customers across the country.
The grand opening ceremony was held at Vivacity Megamall and featured cultural performances, an officiating ceremony, ribbon-cutting session accompanied by traditional sape music, interactive activities and a special dance performance by the Bayu Somerset team.
Speaking at the event, Bayu Somerset Head of Marketing Dania Kamalul Arifin said the company began with a vision of creating a Malaysian fashion brand that women could relate to while celebrating local heritage through modern designs.
She said the journey from an online startup to a nationwide retail brand has been both rewarding and inspiring. Dania added that the opening of the Kuching outlet is more than a business expansion, as it reflects the brand’s long-term commitment to East Malaysia and its appreciation for customers in Sarawak who have supported the company through its online platform over the years.
Located in one of Kuching’s leading lifestyle destinations, the new 1,474-square-foot outlet introduces Bayu Somerset’s “Past-Forward Fashion” concept to East Malaysian consumers. The philosophy combines traditional Malaysian fashion elements with contemporary styling, vibrant colours and exclusive prints designed for everyday wear.
The outlet offers more than 190 fashion designs across over 10 product categories. Customers can find the brand’s signature Baju Kurung Kedah, Baju Kebaya and Baju Kebarung collections, along with menswear, children’s wear, scarves, accessories and merchandise featuring Molly, the company’s mascot.
Bayu Somerset also continues its focus on inclusivity by offering clothing sizes ranging from XXS to 5XL, making its collections accessible to women of various ages, backgrounds and body types.
To commemorate the opening, shoppers visiting the store on July 11 were offered a special Buy One, Free One promotion. Customers can also enjoy membership benefits such as cashback rewards, nationwide exchange and return services, and complimentary home delivery for selected items unavailable in-store.
The company said it remains on track to expand its retail network to 30 outlets nationwide by the end of 2026. Following its entry into Sarawak, Bayu Somerset plans to open its first outlet in Sabah later this year as part of its broader East Malaysia growth strategy.
As the company celebrates five years in the industry, the opening of its first Borneo outlet reflects not only its business success but also the strong support it has received from customers throughout Malaysia. The Kuching launch is expected to strengthen the brand’s presence in East Malaysia while bringing its unique blend of heritage-inspired fashion and modern lifestyle wear closer to consumers in the region.
