Search for Missing Fisherman in Belawai Ends with Tragic Discovery

BELAWAI – The second day of search and rescue efforts at Pantai Tepi Laut, Belawai, has ended with the discovery of the fisherman’s body who was feared drowned.

The victim, identified as Sabarudin Awang Kamarudin, aged 48, was reported missing on 18 February after he disappeared while fishing near Kampung Tepi Laut. Witnesses said he had been casting nets for prawns when he suddenly struggled in the water, waving his hands before vanishing beneath the waves.

On the morning of 20 February, rescuers discovered the body approximately three kilometres from the spot where he was last seen. The remains were handed over to police for further action. According to Bomba Sarawak, the victim was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident, which may have contributed to the tragedy.

The operation involved multiple agencies working in coordination as the operation entered its 2nd day. Eight members of the Civil Defence Force Malaysia (APM) Tanjung Manis branch were deployed in an aluminium boat, while fire and rescue teams scoured the waters and surrounding areas. Local residents also assisted by monitoring the shoreline.

Belawai, a coastal area in Mukah Division, is well known for fishing activities and seaside visits. The incident has raised concerns among villagers about safety measures for fishermen, particularly those who venture out without protective gear.

Authorities have reminded the public of the importance of wearing life jackets and taking precautions when engaging in fishing or recreational activities at sea.

This case was one of two drowning-related operations carried out in Sarawak during the same period. Another search was launched in Betong for a youth who went missing after a boat capsized at Ulu Sungai Skrang.

The discovery of Sabarudin’s body has brought a sombre end to the operation, leaving his family and community mourning the loss. Officials have urged fishermen and coastal visitors to remain vigilant, stressing that unpredictable sea conditions can quickly turn routine outings into emergencies.

The conclusion of the second day’s operation brought closure to the incident, highlighting the importance of community cooperation alongside official rescue teams in responding to emergencies.
