Bintulu Fishermen Urged to Halt Sea Trips Amid Rough Weather

BINTULU – Authorities in Bintulu have advised fishermen to suspend sea activities as unstable weather continues to pose risks along the coast. Persistent rainfall and forecasts of strong winds have raised concerns about dangerous conditions at sea.

Chairman of the Bintulu Divisional Disaster Management Committee (JPBB), Datu Nyurak Keti, emphasised that safeguarding lives must take precedence over fishing operations.

He noted that heavy rain and unpredictable weather patterns could trigger rough waves, making maritime activities hazardous.

Speaking after chairing the JPBB meeting at the Sri Bintulu Meeting Room, Datu Nyurak, who also serves as the Resident of Bintulu Division, urged fishermen to remain cautious and to rely on official advisories before venturing out.

“Fishermen are advised not to go out to sea during heavy rain or unstable weather and to comply with all safety guidelines set,” he said.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has forecast isolated thunderstorms across Sarawak, including Bintulu, with conditions expected to persist throughout the week.

Reports indicate that rainfall combined with strong gusts could lead to wave heights exceeding one metre, further complicating navigation.

Local authorities stressed the importance of staying updated with weather bulletins and urged the coastal community to report any unusual developments to the relevant agencies.

The reminder comes as Sarawak enters its monsoon season, a period often marked by flooding and heightened risks for those living near rivers and coastal areas.

The meeting was attended by senior officials including Superintendent Nixon Joshua Ali, Bintulu District Police Chief, DSP Jame Reis, Tatau District Police Chief, Awang Mohammed Nizam Awang Ali Bolhan, Bintulu District Officer, Calvin Ligong Endawi, Tatau District Officer, and Thadeus Ling Allu, Sebauh District Officer. Representatives from other agencies also participated, reflecting a coordinated approach to disaster preparedness.

The Sarawak Coastguard, established to strengthen maritime security, has also been tasked with monitoring compliance and ensuring safety along the state’s extensive coastline.

Officials highlighted that fishermen should not only heed weather warnings but also adopt best practices in maritime safety, including the use of life jackets and communication equipment.

Sarawak’s fisheries remain vital to the local economy, providing livelihoods for thousands of coastal residents.

However, the risks posed by extreme weather underline the need for vigilance and adherence to safety measures.

Authorities reiterated that postponing fishing trips during adverse conditions is a necessary precaution to prevent accidents and safeguard lives.

As the rainy season continues, fishermen and coastal communities are reminded that patience and caution are essential.

Authorities assured that they will continue to monitor developments closely and provide timely updates to ensure public safety.
