According to Miri Maritime Zone Director Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad, the incident occurred at approximately 11.30am, about 22.4 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Miri. The vessel was detected conducting fishing activities dangerously close to a Petronas oil rig, within less than 500 metres of the structure, which is strictly prohibited under maritime safety regulations.

He explained that such areas are designated as restricted zones to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of both offshore workers and nearby vessels. Unauthorized entry into these zones poses serious risks, including potential collisions and operational hazards.

Further inspection by enforcement officers revealed that the boat did not possess a valid operating licence, constituting an offence under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) 1952. The vessel was operated by a skipper accompanied by two crew members and four passengers, with ages ranging between 22 and 74 years.

“All individuals on board were detained, and the boat was escorted to the Miri Vessel Detention Centre for further investigation,” Mohd Khairol said in an official statement.

The case is currently being investigated under the Prohibited Areas and Prohibited Places Act 1959. If found guilty, those involved may face a fine of up to RM1,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.

Authorities stressed that enforcement operations will continue to be intensified, particularly in sensitive offshore zones, to ensure compliance with maritime laws and to safeguard national waters. The presence of unauthorized vessels near critical infrastructure such as oil rigs remains a serious concern for maritime authorities.

Members of the public are urged to report any suspicious activities or emergencies at sea by contacting emergency services via 999 or reaching the Miri Maritime Zone Operations Centre directly.

This incident serves as a reminder to all boat operators and fishing enthusiasts to respect maritime boundaries and adhere strictly to licensing requirements to avoid legal consequences.
