Bubur Pedas: A Ramadan Delicacy Unique to Sarawak

Ramadan in Sarawak is incomplete without bubur pedas, a traditional dish that is eagerly anticipated every fasting month. Alongside other popular Ramadan treats such as air katira and bubur lambuk, this spicy porridge holds special significance for the Sarawak Malay community. Unlike bubur lambuk, which is commonly found throughout Malaysia, bubur pedas is exclusive to Sarawak, making it a treasured part of the local food heritage.

A Dish That Requires Skill and Patience

Bubur pedas is not an ordinary porridge—it is rich in flavor and made from over 30 different ingredients, including an array of spices, vegetables, and coconut milk. The preparation process is labor-intensive, requiring patience and teamwork to achieve its authentic taste. Cooking this dish is a community effort, strengthening the bonds among residents.

Gotong-Royong Strengthens Community Spirit

During the event, villagers gathered in gotong-royong (communal cooperation) to prepare and distribute the bubur pedas, demonstrating the togetherness and generosity that Ramadan represents. The presence of YB Dato Lo Khere Chiang, accompanied by Gerald Goh and Diana John, further highlighted the significance of supporting local traditions and fostering unity within the community. Their participation in the event emphasized the importance of preserving Sarawak’s cultural heritage while strengthening relationships among residents.

This annual tradition not only preserves Sarawak’s cultural heritage but also reminds the community of the importance of sharing and cooperation during the holy month. With each bowl of bubur pedas served, the values of Ramadan—charity, unity, and gratitude—are celebrated.
