MIRI – Firefighters from the Lutong Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) swiftly responded to a bushfire incident this morning in Kuala Baram, which covered more than half an acre of land.
BBP Lutong chief, Henry Jugah, said they received an emergency call at 9.20am and immediately dispatched a team to the scene.
“The fire team used a single jet of water from a first aid hose to fully put out the fire,” Henry said.
He further revealed that early investigation suggests the fire was deliberately started, as there were signs of burning residue left behind.
“We suspect this bushfire didn’t happen naturally. Someone may have started it on purpose,” he added.
Open Burning: A Serious Risk, Not a Shortcut
Henry strongly urged residents to stop open burning, even for small-scale gardening. He emphasised the dangers that come from such irresponsible actions, especially during the dry season.
“If you do burn garden waste, make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving the area. And better yet, avoid burning altogether,” he advised.
He also reminded that repeated warnings have been issued due to increasing fire cases in the area. Intentionally starting fires not only endangers the environment but also wastes valuable emergency resources.
Call for Action from Community Leaders
Community leaders are being urged to monitor and educate residents in their areas to prevent similar incidents.
“Please ensure no one engages in open burning. Prevention starts with awareness,” Henry stressed.
As the dry season continues, residents are reminded that carelessness can quickly turn into disaster. Authorities remain on alert, and legal action can be taken against those who deliberately start fires.
