KUCHING, Feb 13 — The air was filled with romance and joy as the age-old tradition of orange tossing during Chap Goh Meh, also known as the Lantern Festival or Chinese Valentine’s Day, brought the community together at China-Malaysia Friendship Park. The festive gathering, jointly organised by Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Midin Media, Chagee, and the Kuching Foochow Association, was a perfect blend of cultural heritage and modern social bonding. Friendship Park at Jalan Song was transformed into a vibrant hotspot for singles and families alike, all eager to partake in this symbolic tradition.

One of the event’s highlights was the tossing of mandarin oranges into the lake’s netted area, with young singles writing their names or contact details on the fruits. According to tradition, if someone retrieves your orange, it could lead to a blossoming romance. While some joined the activity in search of love, others simply enjoyed the fun and festive spirit.

The evening also featured cultural performances like the dragon dance, and a lively bazaar offering delicious food, refreshing drinks, and Valentine’s Day gifts. The event was attended by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who expressed his support for community-based cultural celebrations.
