MIRI – The Faculty of Makan has officially officially opened at Curtin University Malaysia, debuting as a vibrant all-day café and social hub dedicated to enriching student life. More than just an eatery, this new campus landmark is designed to foster community connections and serve as a central gathering point for the university’s diverse demographic.
The launch ceremony took place on 29 April 2026 and was officiated by Sarawak’s Minister of Transport, Yang Berhormat Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
The café, operated by Interhill Food, aims to be more than a dining space. It has been conceived as a lively hub where students, academics and the wider community can gather, share ideas and enjoy modern Malaysian comfort food.
With flexible seating, strong Wi-Fi connectivity and ample power outlets, the venue is tailored to support both study and social interaction.
Alan Tham, Vice President of Food & Beverage at Interhill Hospitality, described the opening as the start of a new chapter in campus life.
“Today is more than the launch of a café. It is the beginning of a new space on campus, one that we hope will become a daily favourite, a familiar comfort and a lively hub for this community,” he said.
He added that the Faculty of Makan was created with the belief that good food inspires good ideas, offering a welcoming environment for both relaxation and productivity.
The Minister of Transport highlighted the importance of holistic campus environments that extend beyond classrooms. He noted that spaces such as the Faculty of Makan play a vital role in shaping student experience by encouraging collaboration, creativity and connection.
“The Faculty of Makan reflects our vision of nurturing future-ready generations through an integrated ecosystem that supports learning, well-being and innovation,” he said. He also praised the café’s balance between modern tastes and local culinary heritage, reflecting Sarawak’s progressive spirit.
The opening menu showcases a blend of Sarawakian and Malaysian favourites, including Kolok Mee, Nasi Lemak Special and Marudi Fried Kueh Tiaw, alongside Japanese-inspired dishes such as Chicken Katsu Curry and Gyudon.
Freshly baked goods, smoothies, juices and barista-crafted beverages complete the offering, with prices kept affordable for students.
A highlight of the launch was the unveiling of a permanent mural by Malaysian artist Andharas, known for his expressive storytelling through art.
The mural, symbolising growth, knowledge and connection, was completed with a final stroke ceremony by Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
The event also featured a ribbon-cutting, firecracker display and traditional lion dance, followed by a luncheon reception.

Faculty of Makan is now open daily, operating Monday to Saturday from 11.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. and Sundays from 4.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m.
A grand opening promotion runs until 15 May 2026, offering guests an additional 10% bonus credit when purchasing store credit via Touch ’n Go eWallet.
Curtin University Malaysia and Interhill Food emphasised that the café represents a shared commitment to student well-being, creativity and community-building.
Partnerships between education and industry, they said, demonstrate the potential of collaborative efforts in shaping vibrant campus environments.
