BAU – A cyclist involved in a road accident along KM 1.0 of the Bau-Kuching Road on 1 May has died from severe head injuries while receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital.
The incident occurred at approximately 6.00 am when a Perodua Axia travelling from Bau towards Kuching collided with a cyclist who was believed to have entered the main road from the right side.
Initial investigations revealed that the impact caused the cyclist to suffer traumatic brain injuries. The victim was admitted to the neurosurgery ward of the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on 10 May.
Police confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers offences related to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Bau District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Haide bin A. Rahman, issued a statement urging road users to remain vigilant, particularly at junctions, bends, and during early morning hours when visibility may be reduced.
He reminded the public to exercise caution and be sensitive to surrounding conditions to prevent similar tragedies.
The police also advised against spreading unverified information regarding the incident, stressing that misinformation could disrupt the investigation process.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident, including the role of the driver and the cyclist’s movements prior to the collision.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Sarawak, particularly for vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
