Elderly Woman Injured in Fall, Sibu APM Responds Swiftly

SIBU – An elderly woman was rushed to hospital after falling at her home along Long Bridge Road in Sibu on Sunday morning.

The incident was reported at 11.33 am. A team from the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Sibu District arrived shortly after and found the woman with a sprained left hand and visible bruises. She also complained of pain in her arms and legs.

Emergency responders gave first aid at the house before sending her to KPJ Sibu Specialist Medical Centre for further checks. She was handed over to hospital staff at 12.14pm.

Falls remain one of the leading causes of injury among older adults in Malaysia. The Ministry of Health Malaysia has repeatedly warned that domestic accidents involving seniors account for a large share of hospital admissions. Many of these cases are linked to unsafe home setups or mobility issues.

APM urged families to take simple steps to reduce risks at home. Keep walkways clear. Remove loose rugs. Make sure furniture is stable. Install handrails where needed and ensure rooms are well lit, especially at night.

In Sibu, community groups continue to work with healthcare providers to promote elderly safety. Awareness programmes focus on regular health screenings, physiotherapy to maintain mobility, and closer family supervision for those at higher risk.

The Civil Defence Force reaffirmed its role in responding to emergencies and reminded residents to make home safety a priority, particularly for ageing family members.

As Malaysia’s elderly population grows, prevention at home becomes more urgent. Small adjustments and closer attention make a difference in reducing avoidable injuries.
