KUCHING : A family of five, including a two-year-old girl, lost their lives in a tragic road accident along Jalan Baki Lama-Ensengei in Serian on Wednesday morning.
The heartbreaking incident occurred at about 8.41am and involved a single vehicle believed to have lost control before crashing into a water pipe. The accident claimed the lives of all five occupants, leaving the local community in shock and mourning.
According to a statement issued by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), an emergency call regarding the accident was received at 8.41am. A team from the Serian Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Serian) was immediately dispatched to the scene, which was located approximately 12 kilometres from the station.
The rescue team arrived at the location at 9.04am and discovered that the vehicle had been severely damaged after colliding with a water pipe. Firefighters quickly assessed the situation and began rescue operations involving the victims trapped inside the vehicle.
JBPM said there were five victims in the vehicle, comprising one adult man, three adult women and a baby girl. Four of the victims were trapped inside the wrecked vehicle and had to be removed by firefighters using rescue equipment.
The baby girl was later found by members of the public near the scene of the accident. Authorities believe the child was thrown out of the vehicle due to the strong impact of the collision.
All five victims were pronounced dead at the scene by officers from the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM). Their bodies were subsequently handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for further investigation and follow-up procedures.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Bostari Aidit, 30, Ajibah Ahmat, 47, Nur Farah Shahira Narudin, 26, Nur Ain Nasrin Narudin, 16, and Nur Assyfa Luthfya Narudin, aged two.
The operation involved personnel from JBPM, PDRM and KKM. Authorities reported that the situation was brought under control at 9.20am, while the rescue operation was fully completed at 9.51am.
Police are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident. At this stage, the incident is believed to be a self-accident involving loss of vehicle control.
The tragedy has drawn sympathy from many members of the public, who expressed their condolences to the family and relatives of the victims. The loss of an entire family, including a young child, has made the incident one of the most heartbreaking road accidents reported in Serian in recent times.
Road safety advocates continue to remind motorists to remain vigilant while driving and to ensure vehicles are in safe operating condition, particularly when travelling on rural roads. Authorities have also urged road users to always observe speed limits and drive responsibly to prevent similar tragedies.
As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of five lives taken in a single devastating accident, a tragedy that serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and caution behind the wheel.
