SIBU – Police have confirmed a fatal road accident along Jalan Salim late on 6 June 2026, which claimed the life of a young motorcyclist and left another injured.
According to the Sibu District Police Headquarters (IPD), the incident occurred at approximately 11.15pm and involved a Lexus RX350 driven by a 25-year-old local man and a Yamaha 135LC motorcycle carrying two 19-year-old men.
Preliminary findings suggest the Lexus was travelling from Sibu town towards Salim when the driver reportedly lost control, skidded into the opposite lane and collided with the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.
The impact caused severe injuries to the rider, who was later pronounced dead at Sibu Hospital at 12.24am. His pillion passenger sustained injuries and remains under medical care.
Police confirmed that the motorcycle rider underwent an initial urine test, which returned positive for methamphetamine. He was subsequently arrested, and a remand application is scheduled for 8 June 2026 to assist with further investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deals with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Authorities emphasised that investigations are ongoing and urged the public to exercise caution on the roads, particularly during late-night travel.
Road safety continues to be a pressing issue in Sarawak, with recent statistics highlighting the risks posed by speeding, impaired driving and lack of protective gear among motorcyclists.
Community leaders and enforcement agencies have repeatedly called for greater awareness and stricter adherence to traffic laws to reduce fatalities.
Police have extended their condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure justice is served.
The Sibu District Police Chief, ACP Azari Bin Miskon, confirmed the details in a press release issued on 7 June 2026.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in tackling road accidents, particularly those involving young drivers and riders.
With investigations underway, the case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the consequences of negligence on the road.
