KUCHING – A fire broke out this evening at the construction site located behind Tropic City, Kuching, affecting temporary workers’ quarters and parts of the construction area. The incident marks the second fire reported in the vicinity within a week, raising concerns about site safety and emergency preparedness.
Emergency services were alerted promptly through the 999 hotline and the fire department’s direct line. Firefighters arrived swiftly and managed to bring the blaze under control before it could spread further. Early assessments confirmed that no injuries were sustained, and all workers were accounted for.
The fire originated in the workers’ dormitories, which are often built with lightweight materials and can be vulnerable to rapid ignition. Construction sites in Malaysia have previously been flagged for fire risks due to temporary housing arrangements and limited fire prevention infrastructure. Authorities are expected to review safety protocols to prevent similar incidents.
Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Dato Wee Hong Seng, expressed gratitude to the fire and rescue teams for their rapid response. He emphasised that the council will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with relevant departments to ensure thorough safety inspections are carried out.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and cooperate with relevant departments to conduct safety inspections and handle the aftermath. Thank you for your prompt response and support,” he stated.
The incident highlights the importance of fire safety awareness in construction zones, particularly where workers reside on-site. Temporary dormitories, often constructed from wood and zinc sheets, can pose significant hazards if fire prevention measures are not strictly enforced. The Fire and Rescue Department has repeatedly urged contractors to implement stricter safety standards, including fire extinguishers, clear evacuation routes, and regular inspections.
This latest fire follows another blaze reported earlier in the week in the same area, though details of that incident remain limited. The recurrence has prompted calls for heightened vigilance and stricter enforcement of safety regulations. Local residents have voiced concerns about the risks posed by construction-related fires, especially in densely populated urban areas such as Kuching.
Construction activity in Kuching has been expanding rapidly, with several major projects underway to support urban development. While these projects contribute to economic growth, they also bring challenges in maintaining safety standards. The MBKS has pledged to strengthen collaboration with developers and contractors to ensure compliance with fire safety requirements.
The Royal Malaysia Police and the Fire and Rescue Department are expected to conduct a joint investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary findings suggest that electrical wiring in the dormitory area may have been a contributing factor, though this has yet to be confirmed. Investigators will also examine whether safety equipment was adequately provided and maintained.
Community leaders have urged construction companies to prioritise worker safety, noting that incidents such as these can have severe consequences not only for employees but also for surrounding neighbourhoods. The Kuching community has been reminded to remain vigilant and report any unsafe practices observed at construction sites.
As Kuching continues to grow, balancing development with safety remains a pressing issue. The MBKS has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all construction projects adhere to strict safety standards, with regular inspections and enforcement measures to safeguard both workers and residents.
