SIBU – The Sarawak government has announced the establishment of the Sibu Economic Zone (SEZ), a dedicated body tasked with coordinating the town’s economic and urban development in a more integrated and strategic manner.

The initiative, unveiled on 11 July 2026 during the Sarawakku Sayang Ceremony at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang, reflects the state’s ambition to strengthen Sibu’s competitiveness in line with Sarawak’s evolving economic landscape.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg confirmed that RM1.5 billion will be allocated in the upcoming Sarawak State Budget to support the establishment and implementation of the SEZ.

He explained that Sibu’s economic development requires a tailored approach, distinct from other regional agencies, due to its unique economic structure and increasingly complex service demands.

The Premier emphasised that the SEZ will serve as a central platform to coordinate strategic development projects, attract both domestic and foreign investment, and strengthen the local business ecosystem.

He noted that the initiative is designed to align Sibu’s growth with the state’s broader economic priorities, which currently focus on green energy, services, tourism, finance, and knowledge-based industries.

Sibu’s strategic location and expanding transport network position it as a potential hub for trade, logistics, and services in central Sarawak. The SEZ is expected to enhance this role, driving more balanced economic growth between urban and rural areas.

By integrating modern infrastructure with sustainable practices, the zone aims to ensure that development benefits are widely shared among local communities.

The Premier highlighted that sustainability, technological innovation, and human capital development will be central to the SEZ’s agenda. These elements are seen as crucial in ensuring that Sibu’s transformation into a modern, competitive city is both inclusive and future-proof.

Close cooperation between local leaders, civil servants, the Resident’s Office, and government agencies will be essential to the success of the SEZ.

The Premier expressed confidence that the initiative will act as a catalyst for long-term economic progress, positioning Sibu as a key driver of Sarawak’s Post-COVID Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

Observers note that the SEZ represents one of the most significant investments in Sibu’s future, signalling the state’s commitment to decentralising growth and empowering regional centres.

By focusing on sectors such as renewable energy and knowledge industries, the zone is expected to create new opportunities for businesses and workers alike.

Local stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, viewing it as a timely intervention to revitalise Sibu’s economy. The SEZ is anticipated to not only attract investment but also foster innovation, improve service delivery, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

As Sarawak continues to diversify its economy, the Sibu Economic Zone stands as a landmark initiative that blends strategic planning with community-focused development.

With strong financial backing and a clear vision, the SEZ is poised to reshape Sibu’s role within the state’s economic framework, ensuring that the town remains competitive and resilient in the years ahead.
