The incident occurred at Brother Alignment and Wheel, located along Jalan Gunung Gading National Park, when an emergency call was received at 7.27pm. Firefighters from the Lundu Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Lundu) were dispatched immediately, covering a distance of approximately two kilometres to reach the site.

Upon arrival, the team discovered two vehicles engulfed in flames. A Toyota Hiace van was found completely destroyed, while a Proton Saga BLM sustained significant damage, with fire affecting around 35 per cent of its left side and rear. Firefighters acted quickly to prevent the blaze from spreading further.

Using a hundred-foot hose line connected to the water tank of their fire engine, the crew managed to suppress the flames effectively. The operation continued until the fire was fully extinguished, and the area was declared safe. Once the situation was under control, the team returned to their station.

Vehicle fires are not uncommon in Sarawak, with several similar incidents reported in recent years. According to fire safety experts, such blazes can be triggered by electrical faults, fuel leaks, or overheating components. Public awareness campaigns have often highlighted the importance of regular vehicle maintenance to reduce risks.

The Fire and Rescue Department has consistently emphasised the need for community vigilance. Motorists are advised to carry basic fire extinguishers in their vehicles and to seek immediate assistance if signs of overheating or smoke appear. In this case, the rapid response of BBP Lundu ensured that the fire did not spread to nearby structures or endanger lives.

Local residents expressed relief at the swift action taken by the firefighters. The incident, though destructive to the vehicles involved, did not result in injuries. Authorities have reminded the public that early reporting of emergencies is crucial in preventing greater damage.

Sarawak’s Fire and Rescue Department continues to strengthen its operational readiness, with regular training and community engagement programmes. These initiatives aim to prepare both personnel and the public for unexpected emergencies, reinforcing the importance of safety and prevention.

The Lundu operation reflects the department’s commitment to protecting lives and property. While investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing, officials have reiterated that preventive measures remain the most effective way to reduce such risks.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of fire hazards and the critical role of emergency services in safeguarding communities. The professionalism displayed by BBP Lundu highlights the importance of preparedness and rapid intervention in ensuring public safety.
