LUNDU – Firefighters from the Lundu Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Lundu) carried out a special service operation on Saturday night to eliminate a hazardous hornet’s nest in Kampung Kuala Bandang.

The emergency call was received at 9.29pm, with the team travelling approximately nine kilometres to reach the site. Upon arrival, they discovered a hornet’s nest built on a guava tree, positioned at a height of around six feet.

Using a torch, the firefighters destroyed the nest completely, ensuring that the operation was conducted safely and thoroughly. Once the hive was removed and the surrounding area declared secure, the team returned to their station.

Hornet nests are considered dangerous due to the aggressive nature of the insects. Their stings can cause severe pain and, in some cases, allergic reactions that require medical attention. Large swarms pose a particular risk to residents, especially in rural communities where nests are often found near homes, farms, or public pathways.

Sarawak has seen an increase in reports of hazardous insect nests in recent years, with the Fire and Rescue Department frequently called upon to intervene. Officials have consistently advised the public not to attempt removal themselves, as improper handling can provoke hornets and lead to serious injuries.

Environmental experts highlight that while hornets play a role in controlling other insect populations, their nests near human activity present significant safety concerns. Balancing ecological considerations with public safety remains a challenge, and removal operations are carried out only when nests pose a direct threat.

Residents of Kampung Kuala Bandang expressed relief at the swift intervention, noting that the hive’s location in a commonly used area could have led to accidents if left unattended. The operation underscores the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with emergency services.

The Fire and Rescue Department continues to remind the public to report such hazards promptly. Early reporting allows authorities to act before incidents occur, reducing risks to both individuals and property. Awareness campaigns are also conducted to educate communities on identifying dangerous nests and understanding the potential health risks associated with insect stings.

This latest operation in Lundu highlights the department’s commitment to safeguarding communities across Sarawak. While no injuries were reported, the successful removal of the hornet’s nest demonstrates the effectiveness of preparedness and rapid response in ensuring public safety.
