BETONG – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Betong District successfully carried out a special operation to remove a hornet’s nest in Rian Batang on 10 July 2026, following a public complaint.
The call was received regarding the presence of a hornet’s nest in a vegetable garden, raising concerns for the safety of the garden owner and nearby residents. Acting swiftly, three APM personnel were deployed to the site to conduct inspections and take necessary action.
Upon arrival, the team discovered a hornet’s nest estimated to be the size of a takraw ball. Due to its size and location, the nest posed a potential danger to anyone working in or passing through the area. Hornets are known for their aggressive behaviour, and their stings can cause severe pain or allergic reactions, making immediate intervention essential.
The destruction operation was carried out using controlled burning techniques, in line with prescribed safety measures. Equipped with a JMC LRV vehicle, protective gear, and specialised tools, the team ensured the task was completed smoothly without any unwanted incidents. The operation concluded successfully, with the nest fully destroyed and the area declared safe.
APM Betong has reminded the public not to attempt removing hornet nests or other poisonous insect colonies on their own. Such actions can provoke the insects and lead to serious injuries. Instead, residents are encouraged to contact the Civil Defence Force directly for assistance. The Betong District APM can be reached at 083-472861.
Hornet nest removals have become increasingly common in Sarawak, particularly in rural and agricultural areas where vegetation provides suitable nesting sites. Authorities have stressed that community vigilance and early reporting are vital in preventing accidents.
Environmental experts note that while hornets play a role in controlling other insect populations, their nests near human activity present significant risks. Balancing ecological considerations with public safety remains a challenge, but removal operations are necessary when nests threaten lives or livelihoods.
Residents of Rian Batang expressed relief at the swift intervention, acknowledging that the presence of the nest could have endangered both the garden owner and visitors. The operation highlights the importance of cooperation between communities and emergency services in maintaining safety.
The Malaysian Civil Defence Force continues to strengthen its readiness through training and awareness campaigns, ensuring that personnel are prepared to respond to a wide range of emergencies. This latest operation reflects their commitment to protecting communities across Sarawak from unexpected hazards.
