KAPIT – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Kapit District successfully carried out a special service operation to remove a honey bee nest at Rumah Bawang, Nanga Selaut Balleh, on Saturday, 11 July 2026.
The incident was reported to Kapit PKOD, prompting Bravo Squad to mobilise four personnel to the location. Upon arrival, the team conducted monitoring while waiting for evening hours to ensure the safety of residents and the public. During the inspection, a honey bee nest was discovered behind the store door of the complainant’s house.
At 6pm, Charlie Squad proceeded with the destruction operation. Using smoke techniques, the team successfully eliminated the hive without incident. Once the operation was completed, Bravo Squad returned to Kapit PKOD, with all equipment and logistics confirmed to be in good condition.
Honey bee nests, while vital to ecosystems, can pose risks when located close to human activity. Stings from bees may cause severe allergic reactions, and large colonies can endanger residents if disturbed. The presence of the nest near a residential property made immediate intervention necessary to prevent potential harm.
APM Kapit has reminded the public not to attempt removing insect nests themselves, as improper handling can provoke aggressive behaviour and lead to injuries. Instead, residents are encouraged to contact emergency services for assistance. The public can reach Kapit PKOD via the emergency line at 999 or the APM Kapit hotline at 084-796330, which operates 24 hours a day.
Sarawak has seen an increase in reports of hazardous insect nests in recent years, particularly in rural districts where vegetation and structures provide suitable nesting sites. Authorities stress that community vigilance and early reporting are crucial in preventing accidents.
Environmental experts note that while bees play an essential role in pollination and biodiversity, nests situated near homes or public areas present unavoidable dangers. Removal operations are therefore necessary when nests threaten lives or property.
Residents of Rumah Bawang expressed relief at the swift intervention, acknowledging that the presence of the hive could have endangered both the household and visitors. The operation underscores the importance of cooperation between communities and emergency services in maintaining safety.
The Malaysian Civil Defence Force continues to strengthen its readiness through training and awareness campaigns, ensuring personnel are prepared to respond to a wide range of emergencies. This latest operation reflects their commitment to protecting communities across Sarawak from unexpected hazards.
