Flood Risk Monitoring Ongoing in Several Areas of Bau

BAU – Authorities are continuing to monitor flood-prone locations across the district as precautionary measures remain in place following rising water levels in certain low-lying areas.

The Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) Bau District confirmed that surveillance activities were carried out on 20 February to assess the situation in several villages identified as being at risk of flooding.

Among the locations under close observation are Kampung Suba Buan and Kampung Buso, where minor flooding has been reported. The situation in both areas currently remains manageable, with water levels largely confined to low-lying zones.

Emergency personnel have been deployed to monitor river and drainage conditions, which are key indicators of potential flood escalation. Such proactive monitoring efforts are part of ongoing preparedness measures commonly undertaken during periods of heavy rainfall in Sarawak.

Local authorities noted that seasonal weather patterns, including prolonged rain, can lead to rising water levels in rivers and drainage systems. These conditions often result in temporary flooding, particularly in rural settlements situated near waterways or in areas with limited elevation.

Despite the current stability, APM Bau has advised residents living in affected and surrounding areas to remain vigilant. Community members are encouraged to keep a close watch on changes in river levels and nearby drains, as sudden increases could signal a higher risk of flooding.

Residents have also been urged to take early precautions, such as safeguarding important belongings and preparing for possible evacuation if conditions worsen. Authorities emphasised that public awareness and readiness are essential in reducing the impact of natural hazards.

Flood monitoring operations in Bau form part of broader disaster management efforts across Sarawak, where local agencies routinely collaborate to ensure swift responses during emergencies. These measures aim to protect lives and minimise damage to property, particularly in vulnerable communities.

Members of the public requiring assistance or facing emergency situations are advised to contact APM Bau at 082-762925 or reach out via the national emergency hotline at 999.
