KUCHING – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak has launched Special Ops on commercial vehicles in the Kuching area to check vehicle contravention and safety aspects. The measures were carried out on 19 January 2026, consisting of city patrols and static enforcement checks at Jalan Keruing and Jalan Bako.
Enforcement was also carried out by JPJ’s Mobile Weighing Unit, which had checked 53 units of commercial and private vehicles. Among the violations found included overloading, expired road tax and breaches of LPKP permit conditions as well as other technical offences in terms of vehicle safety.
Officials emphasize that operations conducted are in line with JPJ’s continuous efforts to ensure compliance by commercial vehicles. “We want to achieve the highest level of compliance possible in order to minimise risks on our roads and protect all road users’ safety.”
The JPJ Sarawak had announced that such operations will be conducted on a regular basis as part of efforts to be more proactive in enforcing the law. The department, in the note, said that tough implementation is required to discipline vehicle drivers and avoid accidents due to negligence or violation of rules.
The Mobile Weighing Unit is instrumental in the detection of overloaded vehicles, as they are a major threat to road security and pavement. Overloads may result in mechanical failures, extended stopping distances and create additional wear on the roads, so enforcement is essential to public safety.
Residents of the community who spoke with Saturday Vanguard, found good reason to cheer the move as, according to them, regular enforcement will force discipline on drivers and prevent commercial activities from taking a toll on safety measures. JPJ said it will ensure that its enforcement measures are transparent and fair.
The Special Ops typifies JPJ Sarawak’s wider drive to cultivate a road safety culture which also involves surveillance, enforcement and knowledge sharing. Police hope that continued action will persuade motorists to adhere to the law and cut down on road offences.
